Today I found myself riding up the long windy road to the Butler Mansion where I met Barry and Melissa. This wasn’t an ordinary wedding day, in fact, it wasn’t a wedding at all, today marked a celebration of their commitment, commitment to each other, commitment to their kids and the idea of family. When I walked upstairs, I ran into the couple trying to get their kids ready for the big day. Safe to say, things weren’t going as planned. The two girls were pretty good, yet their son, the youngest, was having a bit of a moment, with hot tears and a pouty faced he seemed more interested in a nap than any ceremony. Nevertheless, Barry and Melissa took it in stride, which I soon learned is how they approach all things within this chapter of their lives. With their children leading the way, the couple walked to renew their vows. As his eyes brimmed with warm tears, Barry doubled-down on the commitment he made a decade ago. How proud he was of the woman who’d given him so much in life. Melissa followed her husband’s vows with words that were both authentic and custom fit for her forever groom…..After the ceremony, the party began. Unlike most receptions, children ruled the day. You honestly couldn’t walk two feet without tripping over one….literally…I think I almost tore my ACL once…….. And yet that’s what made it perfect, Melissa and Barry’s celebration was not just theirs, but a celebratory atmosphere dedicated to the essence and idea of family. Their family. Their love. Forever……
